Volumes 1–4 cover the magazine's foundational years (1902–1909), during which it established itself as a key resource for amateur and professional magicians. In 1904, Hilliar relocated the publication to Kansas City, Missouri, under the patronage of physician A.M. Wilson, who became a co-editor. By November 1902, it served as the "Western Organ" of the Society of American Magicians (S.A.M.), and from March 1909, it became the organization's official organ—a role it held intermittently until 1953. This affiliation boosted its credibility and circulation.
