Original publication and copyright 1914, reprinted 1963. Narratives of the Witchcraft Cases, 1648-1706, edited by George Lincoln Burr, is a seminal collection of primary sources documenting 17th-century New England witch hunts. It compiles 13 firsthand accounts, including court records, letters, and testimonies from ministers and judges (e.g., Increase Mather, John Hale), highlighting the religious fervor, social friction, and spectral evidence that fueled the hysterical persecutions
Key Aspects of the Narratives:
The Salem Witch Trials (1692): The narratives primarily focus on the Salem crisis, where over 200 people were accused in a climate of fear, political tension, and theological panic.
Primary Source Voices: The collection includes accounts from key figures such as Cotton Mather, John Hale, and Deodat Lawson.
Evidence and Accusations: Narratives detail the use of "spectral evidence" (evidence from dreams or visions) and the "witch tests" used to determine guilt.
Post-Trial Remorse: The accounts document the later apologies of participants, such as the 12 jurymen and Ann Putnam Jr., who confessed they were "deluded by Satan"
Condition: Book is in good condition. The slip cover is dark from aging as is the top of the book. The book cover The has small on the binding only and suffers more from the darkness of aging then damage. As such the slip cover is doing what it was designed to do, take the hits while preserving the actual book.
While this is not stamped "Ex Libris" there is a stamp inside the book that reads: Samuel Weiser with unintelligible signature followed by the second owner Brother Shadow "From the Library of Brother Shadow." On the back inside cover Carl also listed his real name with some of his artwork. Thus the provenance of the book is well established.
These books are great for mediums interested in creating ambience by having a shelf full of similar like books as well as used for learning the vocabulary of words that could be interwoven into a dark seance.
