Being granted access to someone’s own home and performing a seance there is a powerful and intimate affair. When I was starting out in my career, I did many private evenings and can remember most of them quite vividly. There is something incredibly intimate with being so up-close and personal to the participants. The atmosphere crackles with nervous excitement. Now my audiences are considerably larger but every now and then I get to meet a smaller group. I look forward to these immensely and I’m reminded of how it all felt in the beginning — arriving at a stranger’s home with a small box of trinkets to find an expectant group of faces. These evenings are a unique style of performance and offer opportunities for real connections and genuine experiences that stage shows cannot match.

I first read “Have seance will travel” around 2003, a good 8 years after it was first put to paper. I realise now, re-reading it again, how much of this little book matches my own philosophy and ideas when it comes to performance and inducing the correct atmosphere.
