Q. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in escapes?
A. Don’t take chances. Many people have bought into the illusion of escape. Houdini never went into an escape without a backup plan in case something went wrong. The Houdini Movie, starring Tony Curtis, was just that, a movie, and not real life. Never take any unnecessary chances with escapes.
Q. Have you ever been injured performing an escape?
A. I pulled a muscle in my shoulder doing the water torture cell escape for my second special, Lance Burton-The Encounter.
Q. Why do you perform escapes?
A. I perform escapes because they play big for television. It is usually a highlight of my specials.
Q. Do you take any special preparations for any of your escapes?
A. I practiced holding my breath for the Water Torture Cell.
Q. Tell me more about the Houdini Stamp unveiling in October.
A. The U.S. Postal service asked if I wanted to be involved in the event. I said sure, and they had Tony Curtis there to help put me into the straitjacket.
Q. How does it feel to carry on the Tradition of the Royal Dynasty of Magic?
A. It is an honor. Lee Grabel bestowed it on me. We still talk and see each other. It is important to keep alive the history of magic. We can learn so much by going back to the old days. Many of the new routines that I have come up with are based on principles that were used years ago.
Q. Where do you see yourself in the future?
A. Hopefully right here at the Monte Carlo in Las Vegas . I love my job, and coming to work each day. It is great to do something that you love so much.
Q. Your recent East Coast tour went very well. Are there pains to tour again?
A. We try to tour twice a year. We will be in Japan for two weeks in April and May.
