Memoirs of Robert Houdin - Stevens Estate

The Memoirs of Robert-Houdin by Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin was first published in English in 1859, translated to English from French Confidences d'un prestidigitateur by Lascelles Wraxall. Title page shows the date of 1944, but the Copyright is shown as 1945

This is the amazing autobiography of the man who invented modern magic. This is the fascinating true (mostly) tale of this grand master's life from a young apprentice clock-maker in Blois, France to creating his own Theatre Robert-Houdin in Paris. He even tells the incredible story of when the French government enlisted his services to win over the tribes in Algeria, showing that his magic was stronger than theirs.

Robert-Houdin's magic influenced all generations of magicians who have followed him and even the great Harry Houdini took his name by adding an i to Houdin
