Make NO mistake, this is not a biography, this book will teach you how all these things were accomplished including but not limited to: Contact mind-reading, Q&A, hypnosis, statistics, suggestions, psychometry and much more.

Book is 6 x 9 inches, hardbound with 98 pages. Unquestionably controversial, many of the feats performed by these two individuals are uncanny. Grunewald, illustrates that these two men really did have “real” abilities. On the surface such a bold statement seems incredible, but when you understand the justifications of his argument—as a mentalist you will agree. The interesting point—you too can obtain these real techniques.
Read about how Hanussen, was able to prove in a court of law that he did possess real psychic ability, with such conviction the judge emphatically agreed and dismissed the case against him.
As a mentalist, can you image a more difficult scenario?Grunewald envisioned this project over a decade ago. I’ve always felt both stories would make a great movie because of the times they lived and the way they performed. The author takes a strong view, and one that I totally agree with, of how mentalism has gone from being ‘mentalism’ or mind-reading to actually some type of psychological babble that seems to be popular at the moment. By studying Hanussen and Messing you will find out what real mentalism should look like. Within these pages you will not only learn some of the guarded secrets, but also give a refreshing approach to mentalism, one that I think many of the younger performers will find interesting.

Helmuth makes a bold statement saying you don’t need all the electronic gadgets our there to do impossible mentalism, and again he hits the nail on the head. This might be another eye opening statement for younger readers but it’s absolutely true. The best mentalists in the world don’t need all the gimmicks and gadgets that flow through pages on websites today. If you can do contact mind-reading and perfect it, as Hanussen and Messing both did, then you will save yourself thousands of dollars AND be able to do this anytime and anywhere. There is also a fantastic Q&A in this book which is one of the best I’ve read.

This book will teach you the real secrets to both of these legendary performers, which has to do more with their acting skills, the stage, stories told about them, and skills. You will learn the real secret to great hypnotism, and the author really encourages you to delve deeper in to what it really means. I love this little sentence from the book, “ Get training and then practice, practice, practice! Read as much as you can and become an expert. This is one of the steps to become a real mentalist.” The idea of being a real mentalist is the entire tone of this book and is so refreshing to read. Both Hanussen and Messing, were excellent hypnotists. Hanussen would often refer to hypnotism in his work, but Messing never did but he certainly used the tools to achieve the impossible.

There is so much to learn from this book. It is on the higher end but it is intended for the serious student or performer who wants something different and unique. I think this book would be a real eye opener for many and hopefully inspire readers to re-look at what mentalism was and could be again. More and more mentalists today say they have no psychic abilities and they are doing it psychologically. I love this line from the book on the chapter READINGS, “In my opinion it makes no sense to give readings unless your name is Hannibal Lecter or Sherlock Holmes.”

This book has awakened my concept of mentalism and I hope somebody takes this and runs with it - because it could very easily be something ‘new’ to a new generation that has grown up with being told how things are done. It has also awakened my interest in both of these famous performers and I am now on the search for more information. - Paul Romhany

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0632/1461/6628/files/392855F7-764B-45CE-8FB1-0480D9CBE746.jpg?v=1737198691
magick-bascom-jones-5-vol-set-book
MAGICK - Bascom Jones - 5 Vol. Set - Book

Highly sought-after. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece of Houdini, illustrated throughout.

Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin was a French watchmaker, magician, and illusionist, who transformed magic from a pastime for the lower classes, seen at fairs, to entertainment for the wealthy, which he offered in a theatre opened in Paris. The author of this book, an American magician Harry Houdini (born Ehrich Weiss), was so impressed by Robert-Houdin that he adopted the stage name of "Houdini" in his honor. Yet later, Houdini lost his youthful respect for Robert-Houdin, believing that he took undue credit for other magicians' innovations. This book is his attempt to unearth the truth behind the fame of the French magician.

Houdini was upset that the widow of Robert-Houdin did not want to meet him. As a revenge Harry Houdini wrote The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin, in which Houdini tries to push Robert-Houdin from his pedestal. He tries to show that most tricks Robert-Houdin claimed as his invention were in fact not his invention and that Robert-Houdin was not this great magician he usually is thought he was. But most of Houdini's allegations are fabricated and do not stand close inspection. Jean Hugard wrote as response to Houdini's nasty book Houdini's Unmasking, where Hugard point for point refutes Houdini's argumentation. I personally favor Hugard's opinion, but you can now find out for yourself and get both books for a few bucks.

In any case The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin is insofar very interesting as it shows a lot of images, clippings, and programs of well known magicians. It documents an interesting part of magic history. In fact, at the time of publication in 1906 it was the first such history of European conjuring pre-1850 which was reliable. It was quite unprecedented in its day in it's depth, and scope of scholarship. In fact, it remained the most distinguished book on the subject until quite recently beginning with the contributions of Milbourne Christopher and continuing to the present. It was of course completely overshadowed by the marvelous The Annals Of Conjuring twenty years later, but that was not a book, it was a serial appearing in The Magic Wand in the late 1920's.

Addenda and Corrigenda
Introduction
I.Significant Events in the Life of Robert-Houdin
II.The Orange-Tree Trick
III.The Writing and Drawing Figure
IV.The Pastry Cook of the Palais Royal
V.The Obedient Cards - The Cabalistic Clock - The Trapeze Automaton
VI.The Inexhaustible Bottle
VII.Second Sight
VIII.The Suspension Trick
IX.The Disappearing Handkerchief
X.Robert-Houdin's Ignorance of Magic as Betrayed by His Own Pen

1957 Special Autographed Edition Limited, softbound with photographs, Copy number 1586. Once persecuted as heretics and sorcerers, magicians have always been conduits to a parallel universe of limitless possibility—whether invoking spirits, reading minds, or inverting the laws of nature by sleight of hand. Long before science fiction, virtual realities, video games, and the Internet, the craft of magic was the most powerful fantasy world man had ever known. As the pioneers of special effects throughout history, magicians have never ceased to mystify us by making the impossible possible.

This book celebrates more than 500 years of the stunning visual culture of the world’s greatest magicians. Featuring more than 750 rarely seen vintage posters, photographs, handbills, and engravings as well as paintings by Hieronymus Bosch and Bruegel among others, Magic traces the history of magic as a performing art from the 1400s to the 1950s. Combining sensational images with incisive text, the book explores the evolution of the magicians’ craft, from medieval street performers to the brilliant stage magicians who gave rise to cinematic special effects; from the 19th century’s golden age of magic to groundbreaking daredevils like Houdini and the early 20th century’s vaudevillians.

The authors

Jim Steinmeyer is the author of many books on magic history and practice, including Los Angeles Times best seller Hiding the Elephant (2004) and The Glorious Deception (2006). In the Middle Ages conjurers were mere strolling mountebanks who exhibited their feats at fairs, in barns, and at the castles of the nobility. Things were little better in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, but with the dawn of the eighteenth century we behold magic rising to the dignity of a stage performance, shorn for the most part of charlatanism, Pinetti, Torrini, Breslaw, Fawkes, Comus, Gyngell, Flockton and Lane were the particular exponents of conjuring during this period. The nineteenth century produced a brilliant array of modern magi; such men, for example, as Bosco, Philippe, Robert-Houdin, Comte, Robin, Anderson, Frikell, Compars Herrmann, Alexander Herrmann, Döbler, Robert Heller, Bautier de Kolta, J. N. Maskelyne, Cazeneuve, Félicien Trewey, and Harry Kellar. With the opening of Houdin’s bijou theatre in Paris, on July 3, 1845, a veritable renaissance of conjuring was inaugurated. Robert-Houdin undoubtedly was the Father of Modern Conjuring, for he was the first performer to enunciate the psychology of magic and lay down the fundamental principles of the art. Others have taken up the subject since his day, and given us some really brilliant dissertations; such authors, for example, as Angelo Lewis (our beloved Professor Hoffmann), Nevil Maskelyne and David Devant, Prof. Brander Matthews, and last, but not least, Dr. Harlan Tarbell, whose Course in Magic goes to the very bed-rock of conjuring.

PROEM
Part I.
